Stringing Things Together

Even though we're already nearing the end of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, Milly Sleeping's LookStopShop jewellery showcase - Stringing Things Together - is, happily, still near its beginning.
Including today and tomorrow, there are four weekends left in which to visit. Over the course of September, we'll be posting more pictures and information about the participating artists and their works but, for now, here is an initial close-up of some of the wonderful pieces on display by Anna Varendorff, Jasmina Krupic, Deirdre Hoban, Maripossa (Lauren Besser), Alexi Freeman, Allys Ellen (Allys Phillips) and MüCKE (Ellie Mücke).

Stringing Things Together can be viewed btwn 12pm & 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays until Sept. 29; upstairs at Von Haus, 1A Crossley Street, Melbourne.

The tale of yesterday

Yesterday was the third day of Spring and the first full official day of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week ...
It was the day that we finally said fond goodbye to Gracia + Louise's charm of finches ...
... and the day that Ilia (a student of RMIT's Diploma of Visual Merchandising Course) came to install a new window display - with a little help from Ra the cat, and various passersby (who offered Ilia their advice, and me their commiseration for the graffiti I was painting over).
As you can see, Ilia devised a simple, elegant concept to introduce Spring - which, we have heard, looks very striking from across at the Post Office. As time goes by, the windows will reveal more of Milly Sleeping's Spring Summer 2012/13 collections arriving in store.
Right now, we have a few gorgeous pieces remaining by Romance Was Born, new tops and dresses by Livia Arena and Kuwaii, and the striking prints of High Tea with Mrs Woo.
Thank you Ilia!

Milly Sleeping is very excited to present this new project, which is our first exhibition dedicated to jewellery, and our first time working with several of the designers listed above. We hope you can make it to the 'launch' during Open Haus, this Saturday!

September at Von Haus

Turn, turn, turn...
In case you've just tuned in, every Friday and Saturday, Milly Sleeping opens in a second location - on the upper level of the beautiful Von Haus building, on Crossley Street in Melbourne town.
We share a tiny showroom with the S!X label, at the other end of the hall from Sarah Scout. Every month (to six weeks), there is a general shake-up and rearrangement on our floor - the gallery bumps out one exhibition and bumps in the next, while we whisk the remainder of one lot of garments back to Carlton, and set up a new selection in the space, often in tandem with our own exhibition of sorts.
Since we've been in the city, Milly Sleeping has presented a showcase of costumery by Alexi Freeman, and participated in the Look.Stop.Shop project in collaboration with Gracia + Louise. During September, we will be involved in Melbourne Spring Fashion Week fun-times, with a new project at Von Haus titled, Stringing Things Together (Friday August 31 - Saturday September 29).
Along with this special showcase of jewellery, our racks will hold the work of the ffiXXed label (with some Primoeza and High Tea 'thrown in' for good measure). We're starting with a selection of sale garments from past seasons, and will soon add some new bits and pieces from the latest ffiXXed collection, Home Away From Home - how fitting!

S is for ...

Today it can be said with more conviction than wistfulness - Spring is in the air.

PS. Did you see The Two of Us in the Good Weekend, not last Saturday but the one before? 'Twas nice to read, in their words, a bit of the story of Anna and Luke.
