Stockroom now open...

Things to do this weekend ...

Visit Milly Sleeping (Priority One, of course) to see our reopened stockroom and the continuation of our sale. The lovely pieces pictured above are just a few of the late Summer 'specials' (most plucked from our under $100 rack); there are also lots of great jackets, wool tops and bottoms, and dresses to consider for Autumn and Winter (which are basically upon us).

You might discover the very temporary Arnsdorf Concept Store - open this weekend only - at 90 Moor Street, Fitzroy. We know the clothes are wonderful but the architecture looks excellent too, and worth a trip in itself..?

And/or, visit Bus projects to see the first exhibition in the new space - Body Language (Getting Lost in Translation) - in the basement of Donkey Wheel House at 673 Bourke Street, Melbourne.

Fine print

Just two new pieces ...

... but several possibilities ...

... and many, many fine details.

It's fascinating to see the way Materialbyproduct maximise and minimise ... or highlight and hide ... their repertoire of marks and finishing techniques. The current collection features neckpieces of an exaggerated length; many are sewn into the garment (as opposed to being detachable) but are still optional in the sense that they can be worn flowing off the back or brought to the front about the neck. There are new little knots and contrast stitches, the cotton tags are sewn into horizontal seams across the shoulder line and the famous dots are, in many instances, barely there.

Extraordinary ...

(Photographer - Marija Ivkovic; hair & make-up - Nadja Mott; model - Lani Sommer)

When not working on their biannual seasonal collections, it seems that the designers relax by playing around with a few beads, or a jumpring or two.

Image at top shows a stunning new piece made by designer/printmaker, Alexi Freeman, and Melbourne jeweller, Tessa Blazey. Created for the Powerhouse Museum International Lace Award, the dress is composed of 250 metres of silver chain, 350 cast diamond modules, thousands of jumprings (most likely in excess of 5000), and took over 200 hours to make. The award will be announced on July 29 in Sydney - we wish Alexi and Tessa success!

The image below it features a special commission Materialbyproduct dress - we don't have the figures but it looks to us like a serious quantity of beads and pleats. The North Fitzroy-based fashion house creates unique bridal gowns as well as ready-to-wear pieces for individual clients; to make an appointment contact the studio on 03 9482 6616.

In and out

Today (Friday January 28) is just one of those days - life necessitates that Milly Sleeping be closed between about 1.40 and 2.30, reopening until about 5.45 only. Apologies for any convenience that this may cause.
